William "Bill" Robert Spooner died Sunday, March 30, 2008 in Tallahassee. The Funeral service will be at 11:00 Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at Salem United Methodist Church in Havana. The internment will be at Woodland Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 til 8:00 pm at the funeral home. Faith Funeral Home in Havana is handling arrangements. Mr. Bill graduated from Havana High School in 1946. After high school he attend and graduated from Florida State University with a bachelor's degree in History in 1950. In 1951 he married Barbara Ann Gilmore. In 1952 they had twin sons. He served in the Korean Conflict for 5 years in the US Navy where he achieved the rank of Lieutenant. After the Korean Conflict in 1955 Mr. Bill returned to Havana and joined his father in business as a merchant at Spooner's Department Store until his retirement in 1979. At that time he started his second career in photography, and worked as a freelance photographer for the Associated Press and The Tallahassee Democrat. He was a lifetime member of Salem United Methodist Church. He served the church as; Church Treasurer, Lay Leader, Chair of the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee, and was a loyal faithful member of the church. He was a charter member of the Havana Golf and Country Club were he served as the first treasurer. He served on the Town Council for the Town of Havana for several years. He served as co-chair of the Veteran's Memorial in Havana " Price of Freedom Memorial " He served as a member of the Havana Centennial Celebration Committee in 2006. He was considered one of the true Havana Historians.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years Barbara Ann Gilmore Spooner of Havana. Twin sons: Dr. William Ronald 'Ron" Spooner (and wife Arlene) of Cairo, GA. and Robert D. "Bob" Spooner (and wife Vicki) of Havana. His sister-in-law and brother-in-law; June and Dr. Enwood Ashmore of Havana. Four grandchildren; Dr. Harold R."Hal" Spooner of Dallas, TX. Carla S. Dunn (and husband Brian) of Tallahassee, Lori C. Spooner of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. and Diane M. Spooner of Valdosta, GA. He was a loving, loyal, caring, and compassionate person to his wife, sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren and friends.
