Herbert Holcomb "Hoke" Swisher, II, age 68, went to be with the Lord Friday, October 14, 2011. He was born May 25 1942. Hoke was a nursing home resident at Signature Health Care in Graceville, Florida. He had been a stoic patient there for the past 5years following a third stroke that left him paralyzed on his right side and unable to do anything except for feeding himself.Hoke was preceded in death by his parents Herbert and Maxene Swisher and a brother Jeff. He is survived by a son Carl (Tammy) Swisher, and a daughter Cara Lynn (Richard) Poston, and grandchildren Sheldon Woodcock and Crystal and Bonnie Johnson. He is also survived by three brothers Mike (Margaret) Swisher of Concord. Mark (Willy) Swisher and Harvey (Beth) Swisher of Tallahassee, and two sisters Marcia (Gerald) Nelson of Havana and Jeannette (Bruce) Buckley of Tallahassee.Hoke was a semi-truck driver and drove all over the U. S. Before his stroke. He was born with a built-in GPS before anyone knew what one was. His pride and joy was his fire-engine-red Peterbilt truck; his handle "Cherry Pie". His last job was driving for fifteen years for Raymond Meadows; Mr. Meadows said Hoke was honest, conscientious and dependable.Hoke worked hard all his life. If a perfect stranger needed his paycheck and the coat off his back, Hoke would give it to him, and did more than once.Once he had his stroke and was confined to a wheel chair, Hoke probably thought he would never travel the 100 miles to see his childhood home ever again. But thanks to the services of Home Instead in Tallahassee and J-Tran in Marianna, he was able to be transported to Concord for his birthday, 4th of July, New Years Eve celebrations with 60 or more other members of his family each year.Signature Health Care had a great hand in keeping Hoke as happy and as active as possible. In return, he looked out for the needs of his fellow patients there who could not speak up for themselves. Hoke's family went to visit him on a regular basis to cheer him up, but instead he made us laugh and entertained us. We always looked forward to our visits with him.The graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 17, 2011 at Concord Cemetery. His family will receive friends from 5 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, October 16, at Faith Funeral Home in Havana (850.539.4300 or www.faithfuneralhome.com)
