Ernest Winfield Moore

Havana - Ernest W. Moore, 90, passed away peacefully at home on October 29, 2018. He was born on a farm on The Glade just outside of Havana on November 8, 1927. Ernest was the oldest of five children. He attended Hinson Elementary School and graduated from Havana High School in 1945 where he was president of FFA and president of the Sr. class. After graduation, Ernest enlisted in the Army Specialized Training Reserve Program and attended Clemson University during his freshman year. In 1946, he completed Airborne School at Ft. Benning, Georgia, where he became a paratrooper. Enrollment at the University of Florida followed and he graduated magna cum laude in 1950 with a degree in Agricultural Engineering. While at Florida, he was a member of the honorary Agricultural Fraternity, Alpha Zeta, and the honor society of Phi Kappa Phi. Ernest began Officer Training School in the Army in 1950 and served until 1977 as he attained the rank of Colonel. He served all over the world including NATO Headquarters in Europe, Military Advisor to Persia, Vietnam Campaign, and the Pentagon. In 1963, while in Europe, he met and married his wife of 50 years, Rigmor Moore. After retirement, Ernest was inducted into the Ft. Benning Hall of Fame. He lived in Atlanta, Ga until returning home to Havana in 1994. He was active in the local Retired Officer Association and was chairman of a citizen committee who raised funds for, designed, and constructed the Price of Freedom Veterans Memorial in Havana. Ernest had a great zest for life, as he was always planning his next trip or cruise. He enjoyed family get-togethers, fish fry's, and hosted several old fashioned "cane grindings". He was preceded in in death by his mother, Gordie P. Moore, father Homer A. Moore, brothers Earl Moore, Emory "Buck" Moore, Eugene Moore, and wife Rigmor Moore. He is survived by a sister, Elsie Timmons of Gretna, sister-and-law, Martha Ann Moore, and several nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions can be made to Big Bend Hospice, Inc.
