Biography

Daniel Webster Miller II, 83, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in Havana, Florida, on February 4, 2015 at home surrounded by his family. He was born in Havana, Florida on July 26, 1931. He was the fourth of five siblings.

The funeral service for Dan Miller will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 7, 2015 at Salem United Methodist Church in Havana, Florida with private family interment at Shelfer Cemetery. The Reverend Greg Doss will officiate. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 6, 2015 at Faith Funeral Home in Havana, FL. (www.faithfuneralhome.com or 850-539-4300)

He was raised in Havana and graduated from Havana High School in 1949. He attended the University of Florida on a basketball scholarship and graduated from Florida State University with a degree in Business in 1953. Upon graduation, he married his childhood sweetheart, Carol Elizabeth Ellinor in June of 1953. He subsequently served for 2 years as a Second Lieutenant officer in the United States Army and they were stationed at River Arsenal in Texarkana, Arkansas. After their time in the service, they made their home in Havana, where he resided until his death. They were married 61 years.

He is survived by his wife, Carol E. Miller, daughter Lawson M. Smith (Glenn), brother, Bob Miller (Jan), sister Margaret Doll, sister-in-law Jean Miller, and brother and sister-in-Law Robert and Pipper Ellinor. He is also survived by his grandchildren; Danielle Horak (fiancé©e Nick Henn), Ryan Horak, Benjamin Horak, Caroline Smith (Brian Mathew), and Victoria Smith.

He is pre-deceased by his parents: Marvin William and Thelma Long Miller, sister Dorothy Gregory, brother Bill Miller.
When he returned to Havana after his military service, he began a long career in banking. He served as President of First Federal Savings and Loan in Quincy FL and was a regional bank manager for Pioneer Savings Bank. After "retiring" from the banking business for three weeks, he was asked to consult with First Port City Bank in Bainbridge, GA. He re-entered the banking world and served many more years as their bank president.

From his birth he was an active member of Salem United Methodist Church in Havana. He served in many capacities including church treasurer, Sunday school teacher of 50 years, and choir member. He loved God's Word, shared it, and lived it throughout his life.

He was very involved in the community of Havana. As a young man, he loved and played sports including high school and college basketball. He also played on the Havana Wrappers baseball team. He loved golf, fishing and hunting. He was a founding stockholder in the Havana Golf and Country Club. He was an avid FSU sports fan and one of the original Boosters. He continued to participate in sports as long as he could, and when he could no long participate, he attended every sports event possible. When he could no longer attend, he watched everything on television.

He was a loving and devoted, son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Dan Miller made his living by working in the banking business, but he made his life by what he gave.
